چکیده

Whilst there is no consensus on the exact definition of dependability, many agree that it is a composite term consisting of many different non-orthogonal attributes. These can be in conflict or in harmony. This characteristic of dependability inevitably results in compromises and trade-offs being made during the design process. During the evolution of a dependable system, it is important that stakeholders justify any trade-offs made. These decisions must be made with due consideration of the system’s operational role and context. Scenarios can be used to capture, in descriptive form, the different aspects and context of the system’s operation. Stakeholders can use scenarios to describe their views of intended system operation. Elaborating on the scenarios, stakeholders can elicit specific and more detailed dependability objectives (e.g. relating to safety, performance and availability). By providing a clear context, scenarios allow system stakeholders to reason about the acceptable bounds for each dependability objective. In the design of the system it can be hard to satisfy the dependability objectives of all scenarios. An understanding of the importance of each scenario (as elicited from the stakeholders), together with the bounds associated with scenario dependability objectives, can be used to support the process of trading-off one objective in favour of another during design. In this paper we describe this scenario-based approach to the identification and balancing of dependability objectives in design.

Extending the Safety Case Concept to Address Dependability

A safety case is a well-reasoned argument, supported by evidence that a system is acceptably safe to operate in a particular context. For many, evolving a safety case in step with the design has proved to be an effective means of identifying and addressing safety concerns during a system’s lifecycle. However, ultimately safety cases address only one system attribute safety. Increasingly, the id...

Prediction of the vegetation management impacts on reduction of wind erosion risk in the southern parts of the Varamin Plain, Iran

Wind erosion is a major environmental issue affecting land resources and socio-economic settings in Iran. This paper outlines a study undertaken to provide a new tool to manage wind erosion from physical and economic perspectives. The southern part of the Varamin Plain in south of Tehran is used as a case study. The focus of this study is on exploring the economic and physical impacts of 16 veg...

An Argument Based Approach for Assessing Design Alternatives and Facilitating Trade-offs in Critical Systems

A system’s stakeholders can have requirements involving various non-orthogonal system attributes which can be at odds when implemented. Having to resolve possible conflicts between the different system goals and make trade-offs is an inevitable situation, especially for large-scale systems. In some circumstances trade-offs can be made in a relatively straightforward manner. However, there can b...

An Architecture for Versatile Dependability

Versatile dependability is a software architecture that aims to quantify the trade-offs among a system’s fault-tolerance, performance and resource requirements, and that provides system-level “knobs” for tuning these trade-offs. We propose a visual representation of the trade-off space of dependable systems, and discuss design principles that allow the tuning of such trade-offs along multiple d...

A Hybrid Method Based on Fuzzy AHP and VIKOR for the Discrete Time-Cost-Quality Trade-off Problem

Time, cost and quality are considered as the main components in managing each project. Previous researches have mainly focused on the time-cost trade-off problems. Recently quality is considered as the most important factor in projects success, which is influenced by time acceleration that is the less time is spent the more success is gained. In time-cost-quality trade-off problems, each act...
